v South Petherwin (A)

Batted better but defeat again

Boconnoc made the trip up to South Pethwerin this previous Saturday and were aiming for a win to start the second half of their season, after narrowing losing to this opposition early on in the season. Batting first Michael Blake and Keith Sturgess opened up and put on 26, before Sturgess was caught. Batting at three, John Sleep (30) and Blake put on a decent stand together to get the side up to their 2nd batting point. Petherwin had to juggle with their attack as Steve Drew picked up an injury mid over. In all it was a better batting performance from Boconnoc compared to the week before, with six batsmen scoring 20 or more, Blake's 46 was the highest for them on the day. At the end of the 50 overs, the scoreboard read Boconnoc, 229 for 8.

The South Petherwin reply got off to an eventful start as Digby Taylor could of picked up a wicket with the first ball but a think edge went for a four over the slips instead. Will Geach would pick up a wicket with his first ball to remove the other opener with a catch by keeper Rob Foot. Unfortuanely, Boconnoc weren't able to take regular wickets until a mini-flurry at the end which gave their effort some more respectability in terms of the final scores as Pethwerwin got to the required target after losing 6 wickets but still with a hand full of overs in hand.

Boconnoc 1st XI - Michael Blake, Keith Sturgess, John Sleep, Ian Hunter (capt), Gary Spencer, Digby Taylor, Rob Foot (wk), Will Geach, Kevin Spencer, Simon Terry, Matt Frith

Our 1st XI play in Division 2 East of the Cornwall Cricket League. The current captain is Michael Blake with Rob Foot as vice-captain. The 2017 season saw the side maintain their position via finishing 10th.

2018 has seen some new additions to the side with John and Will Thurston moving to the area and signing with the club and incomings after nearby Liskeard CC packed up with Steve Marchant, Joe Coates and Jamie Coates joining the club.

At the halfway stage of the 2018 season, we have seen two centuries in the side with Jon Niblett scoring one away to St Blazey and Steve Marchant getting his 1st ton for the club at home to Luckett. John Thurston has so far picked up the only 5 wicket haul of the season, which came at home to Grampound Rd.

Michael Blake also represents Cornwall Over 50s in their ECB Counties side. Emily Geach is another Cornwall representative and plays at various levels for Cornwall.
