v Saltash (H)
Blake and Spencers star in victory
Promising start continues
Boconnoc's early season success continued this past Saturday after they picked up their second league win of the season against Saltash. Decent weather welcomed players and specators to the Deer Park. Both of the sides were promoted from Division 3 last year with each side holding a victory over the other.
Batting first Boconnoc lost Dave Smith and Gary Spencer sadly both departed early on with the score on 15. Jon Niblett and Michael Blake formed the backbone of the innings and put on 143 together. Niblett's innings of 57 included 8 fours and would end when he was bowled by Adam Stevenson. Rob Foot would then come to the crease and in partnership with Blake would put on 84. Blake in this time would reach his second century in a row, he found the boundary on 15 occasions and hit one six in his innings which ended on 127 when he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Sam Hunt on the penutlimate ball. The home side finished on a good total of 242 at the conclusion of the 50th over.
Chris Simpson got the visitors off to a blazing start, his innings of 67 moved their team total on to 90 in the first 10 overs, he would be stumped by Foot off the bowling of Kevin Spencer which would be the first of his three wickets on the day. Dave Smith picked up one wicket from his three overs. Boconnoc needed to take all 10 wickets given the start that Saltash had had, runs required wasn't so much an issue for them in the second half of their innings. Spell of the day belonged to Gary Spencer who took his first five-wicket haul since joining the club, finishing on 5 for 13 from 4.1 overs, which included a hat-trick. The Saltash chase finished when the batsmen went for a second run as Will Geach was just about to collect the ball, he threw the ball to Foot who removed the bails to clinch the win by 50 runs.
The win takes the 1st XI up to 54 points which symbolises a decent start with two of the first four games falling victim to weather. This upcoming Bank Holiday weekend sees them taking on South Petherwin at the Deer Park on Saturday and then travelling to take on Liskeard on the Monday.
